Darmeisha didn't like the neighbor woman Suzanne, but she still knocked at her door frequently. She was an unhappy 8-year-old who seemed to enjoy mocking people. Most of their conversations ended with Suzanne telling her that she needed to go home. Suzanne didn't like Darmeisha, but she knew the little girl had reasons for her attitude—living in poverty, having no father in her life, and being neglected by her mother. So Suzanne asked the Lord to help her love Darmeisha. She began greeting her with a smile and showing an interest in her life. Darmeisha gradually warmed up to her and they became friends. The girl is 13 now, and they are having a Bible study together. They talk about what it means to follow Jesus, because Darmeisha has given her life to Him. Jesus took time for children. He was "greatly displeased" when the disciples wanted to keep the little ones away from Him, and He said, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them" (Mark 10:13-14). He even said that we all must receive His kingdom as children do (v.15). A 2004 Barna survey showed that 85 percent of Christians began their relationship with Jesus before age 14. So take time for the children. Reach out to the young.

In Romans 12:1, the apostle Paul applied the truths of what he had already written to the followers of Jesus in Rome. He said, "Present your bodies a living sacrifice." He also urged us to keep our bodies from sinning and to avoid the world's corruption by renewing our minds (v.2). We are often told to give our hearts or our lives to Christ. So why did Paul call attention to our bodies? If we are to carry out God's will, it will be with our bodies. Every pastor has members who say, "I won't be in the service next Sunday; we'll be up at the lake. But I'll be there in spirit." Unfortunately, the "spirit" will contribute nothing to the atmosphere of praise and worship. We also offer God our bodies as a response to His love. The body is a gift worthy of God. Consider the value of the human hand. The brilliant surgeon Dr. Paul Brand, in describing operations performed on the hand, said, "I don't know of a single operation anyone has devised that has succeeded in improving a normal hand. It's beautiful." This Christmas, give God something beautiful. Offer Him not just your heart, but your hands, body, spirit, mind—your entire being!

The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem a few days before His death focused attention on Christ as Lord. When Jesus sent His disciples to get the colt He was to ride, He instructed them to tell its owners, "The Lord has need of it" (Luke 19:31). And when the crowds shouted their praise, they quoted Psalm 118:26, saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" (Luke 19:38). Jesus is Lord. His is "the name which is above every name" (Philippians 2:9). The word Lord refers to His sovereignty. He is the King, and every believer in Him is a member of His kingdom. We make Jesus the Lord of our lives by bowing to His authority as King. This means we live in obedience to Him. Don't be like the man who claimed to be a Christian but chose to live in sin. When his minister confronted him, he glibly replied, "Don't worry, pastor. It's okay. I'm just a bad Christian." It's not okay. Not at all! Not for a member of Christ's kingdom

A woman went to a diet center to lose weight. The director took her to a full-length mirror. On it he outlined a figure and told her, "This is what I want you to look like at the end of the program." Days of intense dieting and exercise followed, and every week the woman would stand in front of the mirror, discouraged because her bulging outline didn't fit the director's ideal. But she kept at it, and finally one day she conformed to the image she longed for. Putting ourselves next to Christ's perfect character reveals how "out of shape" we are. To be transformed into His image does not mean we attain sinless perfection; it means that we become complete and mature. God often works through suffering to bring this about (James 1:2-4). Sometimes He uses the painful results of our sins. At other times, our difficulties may not be caused by a specific sin, yet we undergo the painful process of learning to obey our Father's will. Are you hurting? Perhaps a shaping-up process is in progress. Jesus was perfect, yet He had to learn obedience through the things He suffered (Hebrews 5:8). If you keep on trusting Jesus, you'll increasingly take on the image of His loveliness.

When Jean Brandt was 13, she was arrested, handcuffed, and taken to jail for shoplifting a 75-cent button. She was terrified when it came time to make the phone call to her parents. She explained to her dad and mom what had happened and then said brokenly, "I'm sorry." "Sorry isn't enough," her mom replied. "I'm disappointed in you." After what seemed like an eternity, her parents arrived to take her home. Feeling remorseful about the pain she had caused them, Jean braced herself for angry words and harsh punishment. She got neither. Her father said, "I'm not going to punish you. What you did was wrong, but I think you've been punished enough already." When God becomes angry with us for our sin, it's always justified and His punishment is always fair. Yet the Bible tells us, "His anger is but for a moment" (Ps. 30:5). When we repent, He forgives us and doesn't bring it up against us again (Jer. 31:34; 1 Jn. 1:9). What about you? Have you been afraid to call out to your heavenly Father and confess your sin to Him? Or do you think He's angry with you even though you've asked for His forgiveness? Read Psalm 30:1-5 again and believe it. God's anger doesn't last, but His love does

Straight ahead of me, against a clear blue sky on a warm fall day, a small gray cloud was hanging above a busy intersection. I wondered, What was that lonely cloud doing there on such a perfect afternoon? As if hearing my thoughts, the cloud suddenly shimmered like silver and disappeared. Then, just as suddenly, it reappeared, darker this time and in a new shape—a smile. Then I realized the "cloud" was a flock of birds. They stretched across the road like a wavy banner announcing the song that I was hearing on my radio. As the music of "This Is My Father's World" filled my car, the flock of dancing birds seemed to soar with each majestic phrase—dipping with each downbeat and swelling with each crescendo. I wondered if the other drivers realized that they were in the audience of the Almighty. It seemed to me that all creation was rejoicing in His goodness (1 Chronicles 16:23-33). With my eyes open, I prayed, "Thank You, heavenly Father, for allowing me to watch You conduct this remarkable ballet of birds. Thank You for reminding me that all creation, myself included, is part of Your song and that You are conducting every verse. May my praise and worship be as beautiful to You as Your creation is to me. Amen."

Lois had just undergone cancer surgery and was alone with her thoughts. She had faced death before, but it had always been the death of people she had loved—not her own. Suddenly she realized that losing someone she loved was more threatening to her than the possibility of losing her own life. She wondered why. She remembered that she had asked herself before her operation, "Am I ready to die?" Her immediate answer had been, and still was, "Yes, I am. Christ is my Lord and Savior." With her readiness for death assured, she now needed to concentrate on living. Would it be in fear or in faith? Then God seemed to say, "I have saved you from eternal death. I want to save you from living in fear." Isaiah 43:1 came to mind: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine." Now Lois testifies, "Yes, I am His! That reality is more important than doctors telling me I have cancer." And then she adds, "I win either way!" Lois' insight is a convinced echo of Paul's words in today's text, "For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Let's pray that those words will resonate in our heart. That confidence makes us a winner either way.

Several years ago, a Harvard Business School professor wrote an open letter to the nation's graduates. He told them that in one sense they needed to forget what they had learned in school. He said that schools tend to put too much emphasis on the idea that success comes as a result of passing tests and is based on individual performance rather than on group effort and cooperation. The professor pointed out, though, that in the workplace doing well depends largely on learning to succeed in what he called a "web of relationships." This truth also applies to living the Christian life. We often think that spiritual maturity and success result from how much we know about biblical facts and principles. Christ showed us, however, that it comes from something else--from loving one another in the same way He loved us. He made it clear that we can do this only if we "abide" in Him (Jn. 15:7). This means we must stay close to Him through prayer, and that we will obey His commands (v.10). Our web of relationships must extend to God and then to others. The secret of spiritual success is not just in acquiring individual knowledge--it's in coupling that knowledge with love in all our relationships.

Thirty-five hundred years ago, Moses asked God who He was and got a peculiar answer. God said, "Say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.' . . . This is My name forever" (Exodus 3:14-15). I have long wondered why God would call Himself by such a name, but slowly I am learning its significance. A sentence needs only two things to be complete: a subject and a verb. So when God says His name is "I AM," it conveys the concept that He is complete in Himself. He is subject and verb. He is everything we could possibly need. Jesus put flesh on God's bare-boned answer to Moses' question, "Who are You?" Jesus left heaven to show us what it means to bear His Father's name. He told His disciples, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). He also said, "I am the bread of life" (6:48), "the light of the world" (8:12), "the good shepherd" (10:11), and "the resurrection and the life" (11:25). In Revelation, Jesus declared, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last" (22:13). And He said, "Before Abraham was, I AM" (John 8:58). If you're questioning who God is, take some time to get to know Jesus in the pages of His Word.

Promises are the hope of our heart. A child's security depends on a parent's promise to keep him or her safe. A spouse can live with confidence because of a mate's promise of fidelity, loyalty, and love. Businesses depend on promises from employees, vendors, and clients. Countries remain safe when neighbors keep their promise to honor their borders. Unfortunately, hearts and relationships are broken in all of those situations by unkept promises. There is one Promise-Maker, though, who can be trusted completely and without fear. That one is God. He has given us hundreds of promises in His Word, and He keeps every one of them. If anyone had reason to wonder if God could or would keep His promises, it was Abraham. But "contrary to hope, in hope [Abraham] believed" (Romans 4:18). We know that what God had promised him—that he and his wife would have a child when they were both past 90 years old—could not have happened without divine intervention. Are you looking for hope? Then search the Scriptures diligently and claim the promises of God that apply to you. Promises truly are the hope of the heart, and God always keeps His word.

Jesus, an itinerant rabbi from the town of Nazareth, asserted that He was the light of the world. That was an incredible claim from a man in first-century Galilee, an obscure region in the Roman Empire. It could not boast of any impressive culture and had no famous philosophers, noted authors, or gifted sculptors. And we have no record that Jesus had any formal education.

More than that, Jesus lived before the invention of the printing press, radio, television, and e-mail. How could He expect His ideas to be circulated around the globe? The words He spoke were committed to the memories of His followers. Then the Light of the world was snuffed out by the darkness—or so it seemed. Centuries later we still listen with amazement to Jesus' words, which His Father has miraculously preserved. His words lead us out of darkness into the light of God's truth; they fulfill His promise, "He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life" (John 8:12). I encourage you to read the words of Jesus in the Gospels. Ponder them. Let them grip your mind and change your life. You'll exclaim as His contemporaries did: "No man ever spoke like this Man!" (John 7:46).

The Lord reveals Himself and His glory through creation. But He also does it in various ways through His people. In the book of 1 Peter, we see that God has made us "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people." As we tell others that He has called us "out of darkness into His marvelous light" and shown us mercy (2:9-10), He receives the glory that is due to Him alone. Through our trials, Jesus receives praise, honor, and glory as our faith is "tested by fire" (1:6-7). People are watching us, and when they see us resisting temptation some will "glorify God" (2:12). We also point others to Him when we obey laws and authority "for the Lord's sake" (2:13). And through using the gifts and abilities God has given us to serve others, He is "glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever" (4:11). The Lord says, "My glory I will not give to another" (Isaiah 42:8). If God's number-one priority is to reveal His glory, our privilege and responsibility as His people is to reflect that glory.
